David Liao: Leading HSBC Across Asia and the Middle East

Co-Leading HSBC Asia and the Middle East

Liao became Co-Chief Executive, HSBC Asia and the Middle East in January 2025, building on his role as Co-Chief Executive of HSBC Asia Pacific, which he has held since June 2021.

In these positions, he works with colleagues across the region to support opportunities for HSBC’s customers and communities in Asia and beyond.

A Longstanding HSBC Career

Liao joined HSBC in 1997 and has developed his career through a succession of senior leadership positions.

Before his current role, he served as Head of Global Banking, Asia Pacific from April 2020 to June 2021. Prior to that, he was Chief Executive Officer of HSBC China from March 2015 to March 2020, where he led the bank’s operations in China.

Earlier, from March 2014 to March 2015, Liao served as Head of Global Banking and Markets, China, developing deep experience in the country’s corporate and financial markets.

Leadership Across Asia Pacific

Liao’s progression through HSBC has given him extensive experience across global banking and markets, China, and the wider Asia Pacific region.

His transition from leading Global Banking and Markets in China to serving as CEO of HSBC China and subsequently taking on regional leadership reflects a broadening scope of responsibility within one of the world’s major international banking organizations.

Connecting Customers and Communities

Liao describes his leadership approach through a focus on opening up opportunities for HSBC’s customers and communities. His current regional responsibilities place this objective within a diverse and economically significant area spanning Asia and the Middle East.

His long tenure with HSBC has positioned him to contribute an informed regional perspective to the bank’s continued engagement with customers and communities.
