Bandar Alknawy: Architecting the Future of National Healthcare and Academic Medicine

The Anatomy of National Resilience

Managing health outcomes for an entire population requires a rare blend of clinical insight and institutional scale. It is a responsibility where strategy must meet humanity at every level, ensuring that vast systems never lose sight of the individual patient. Dr Bandar Alknawy operates precisely in this space. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (MNG-HA), he manages an enormous and vital healthcare apparatus in Saudi Arabia. His work goes far beyond standard administration, reaching into the core of how a nation protects and supports its citizens.

“True healthcare transformation occurs when clinical insight guides institutional strategy.”

A Foundation Built on Clinical Excellence

Before stepping into executive governance, Dr Alknawy built a profound understanding of patient care. His journey began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from King AbdulAziz University. He later refined his expertise internationally, completing an internal medicine residency and a gastroenterology clinical fellowship at Dalhousie University. This deep clinical grounding allowed him to lead the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at King Abdulaziz Medical City for nearly a decade. He did not simply study medicine; he mastered it at the highest clinical levels.

Shaping the Next Generation of Practitioners

Exceptional medical institutions are defined by their ability to produce future talent. Recognising this, Dr Alknawy has dedicated a significant portion of his life to advancing academic excellence. He currently serves as the President of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS). Earlier, he held the position of Director of Medical Education and Academic Affairs at King Abdulaziz Medical City. Through these roles, he ensures that the coming generation of healthcare professionals is meticulously prepared to meet evolving global demands.

Trust at the Highest Levels

The true measure of a medical professional is the trust placed in them during moments of consequence. From 2009 to 2015, Dr Alknawy served as the General Supervisor of The Royal Clinics for the late King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Operating in such a sensitive and highly demanding environment requires impeccable judgement, absolute discretion and exceptional medical capability. It is a testament to the profound respect he commands within the highest circles of Saudi leadership.

“A resilient society requires leaders who prepare for the unseen challenges of tomorrow.”

Advancing the Global Healthcare Dialogue

Real impact extends beyond the walls of hospitals and universities. Dr Alknawy actively contributes to the global conversation on medical leadership and resilience. His published work reflects a deep engagement with modern challenges, addressing topics such as global data and digital public health leadership for pandemic responses. Books like ‘Leading Reliable Healthcare’ and articles on the ‘Quaranta Giorni’ leadership test demonstrate his commitment to transforming healthcare systems from the ground up. He also continues to share his clinical expertise through comprehensive guides such as ‘Hepatology: A Practical Approach’.

Transforming the National Architecture

Today, Saudi Arabia is undergoing one of the most ambitious national evolutions in modern history, and healthcare is central to this mission. Dr Alknawy plays a pivotal role in this national effort as an Executive member of the Saudi Health Service Council and the Health Sector Transformation Program. These national governing bodies are tasked with redesigning the delivery of care across the Kingdom. Having also served as Chief Medical Officer at MNG-HA before becoming CEO, he brings over two decades of institutional memory and operational wisdom to these transformation councils.
