Usha Pagarani: From Family Legacy to Enterprise Leadership

Learning the Business From the Ground Up

Pagarani began her career with Al Maya Group in 1997 as a sales assistant at Lamcy Plaza after arriving in Dubai. Her entry into the business placed her directly in the retail environment, providing practical exposure to customers, employees, and day-to-day operations.

Her responsibilities expanded over time. She became HR Director in 2003, Partner in 2006, and Shareholder in 2009, progressively moving from operational and people-focused responsibilities toward broader ownership and executive leadership.

This progression has shaped a leadership approach grounded in direct knowledge of the business rather than ownership alone.

Leading a Diversified Enterprise

Al Maya Group’s activities extend beyond supermarket retail into community retail, franchise operations, food distribution, domestic manufacturing, and other business interests. Its portfolio has included brands and products such as Borders, Pocari Sweat, Fiji Water, Ornamin C, Daily Fresh, and Real Value.

Pagarani’s leadership therefore operates across a diversified enterprise with interests spanning retail, distribution, manufacturing, and investment. Since 1997, the profile describes sustained capital deployment across these areas and the management of a multicultural workforce of more than 4,000 employees representing over 35 nationalities.

At this scale, family-business stewardship increasingly depends on organisational systems, capable people, disciplined management, and long-term decision-making.

Balancing Growth With Stewardship

The profile identifies investments as part of Al Maya’s long-term approach to creating economic value, alongside continued reinvestment in property and other business interests within the UAE.

For Pagarani, this represents more than business expansion. It reflects the responsibility of developing an enterprise whose foundations were established by the previous generation while preparing it for future generations.

Following the deaths of both her parents in 2019, the values identified in her leadership profile—including humility, resilience, integrity, gratitude, and passion—became particularly important to her continuing stewardship of the Group.

Developing Emirati Talent

Talent development is another significant dimension of Pagarani’s leadership.

The profile states that more than 120 Emirati employees have been integrated across retail and executive operations, with an emphasis on career development and executive leadership pathways. This approach places national talent development within the broader objective of strengthening the future capabilities of the private sector.

For a long-established UAE business, developing professionals who can progress into positions of responsibility is closely connected to organisational continuity and succession.

Leadership Through Disruption

Pagarani’s executive responsibilities have also included navigating periods of significant operational pressure.

During COVID-19, the profile describes frontline supply-chain leadership focused on maintaining uninterrupted food availability. It also records a strategic stock buffer of essential food supplies covering at least 90 days during periods of regional tension, supported by coordination with ports, customs, emergency services, and health regulators.

These experiences highlight the operational dimension of enterprise leadership, where maintaining continuity requires coordination, preparedness, and timely decision-making across multiple stakeholders.

Extending Leadership Into Community Contribution

Pagarani’s activities also include philanthropic and community initiatives. The profile records a personal contribution of more than AED 1 million to Dubai Cares’ global education initiatives, alongside support for Emirates Red Crescent and Gaza humanitarian drives, paediatric healthcare, the Rashid Centre for People of Determination, and annual Ramadan food distributions.

Education and literacy have also featured in the Group’s wider community engagement, including efforts to promote reading culture through Borders stores.

A Leadership Journey Rooted in the UAE

Born and educated in Britain, Pagarani studied Business before arriving in Dubai in 1997. Her connection with the UAE subsequently became central to both her personal and professional journey.

In 2021, she was granted UAE citizenship, which the profile describes as a significant personal milestone and a responsibility to continue contributing to the country.

Her story is closely connected to the evolution of Al Maya itself—from her father’s establishment of the business in 1982 to her own progression through its operations and into its current leadership.
