Nabil Alnuaim: Driving Saudi Arabia’s Digital Integration

The Arab CEOs7 hours ago

In October 2024 Nabil Alnuaim stepped into the role of chief executive of Aramco Digital, the new arm created to accelerate the energy giant’s digital road‑map. The appointment followed his two‑year tenure as senior vice‑president of digital and information technology, where he had already overseen the rollout of AI, cloud and cybersecurity platforms across the company.

From Power‑Systems Engineer to Digital Architect

Alnuaim began his career as a power‑system planning engineer for the Saudi Electricity Company, before moving into Saudi Aramco’s refinery operations. Those hands‑on roles gave him a practical grasp of large‑scale industrial processes. A decade later, he returned to Aramco as manager of the National Energy Strategy team, shaping policy that linked energy supply with emerging technologies.

This blend of engineering rigour and strategic thinking laid the foundation for the digital initiatives he would later champion. His academic path, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering followed by an MBA from MIT Sloan, reinforced a habit of pairing technical depth with business insight, a habit that would define his leadership style.

Launching Aramco Digital and Building AI Capability

When Aramco Digital was launched in 2023, Alnuaim became its founding leader. He guided the organisation to embed artificial intelligence, big data analytics and industrial‑Internet‑of‑Things solutions into the core of oil and gas operations. Under his direction, the company introduced Aramco.ai and the Aramco MetaBrain platform, initiatives that focus on generative AI research and internal capability development.

Rather than relying solely on external vendors, he championed home‑grown talent, creating a pipeline of Saudi AI specialists. He also oversaw the Global AI Corridor, a programme designed to attract foreign AI investment while localising knowledge for Saudi startups. The corridor has become a conduit for collaborative projects that align global expertise with national priorities.

Sustained digital transformation emerges when high‑tech ambition is rooted in an intimate knowledge of the underlying industrial processes.

Effective digital change rests on marrying deep industry insight with forward‑looking technology strategy.

Creating Ecosystems for Frontier Technologies

Beyond internal digital work, Alnuaim launched the Saudi Accelerated Innovation Lab (SAIL), a national hub that brings together blockchain, quantum computing and other frontier technologies. The lab encourages partnerships between Saudi research institutions, multinational firms and emerging startups. By fostering a collaborative ecosystem, SAIL aims to translate cutting‑edge research into practical industrial applications, reinforcing the kingdom’s ambition to become a regional technology hub.

The initiative also supports the localisation of talent, ensuring that Saudi engineers and scientists can work on world‑leading projects without leaving the country. These efforts reflect Alnuaim’s belief that sustainable digital adoption requires a network of stakeholders, academia, private‑sector innovators and government bodies, working together under a coherent framework.

Board Leadership and International Perspective

Alnuaim now chairs the boards of NextEra, CNTXT and the National Information Technology Academy, while remaining a director of Aramco Asia. His tenure as president and CEO of Aramco Asia gave him first‑hand experience overseeing investments and partnerships across China, Japan, Korea, India and Singapore. These roles sharpened his understanding of cross‑border governance, risk management and the strategic value of diversified investment portfolios.

On the boards, he applies that insight to steer organisations toward long‑term digital resilience, cyber‑security robustness and talent development. His board work also spans the energy sector, including a three‑year membership on the Saudi Electricity Company board, where he contributed to decisions on national power‑grid modernisation and renewable integration.

Across these responsibilities, Alnuaim emphasises the need for robust governance structures that can adapt to rapid technological change.

Recognition by The Arab CEOs

Nabil Alnuaim’s trajectory illustrates how deep engineering experience can be leveraged into strategic digital leadership. By anchoring AI, cloud and ecosystem initiatives in the realities of Saudi industry, he offers a model for executives seeking to align technology with national development goals. His ongoing board involvement underscores the importance of experienced governance as the kingdom advances its Vision 2030 agenda.
