Stephen Moss: Leading Digital Banking and Strategic Transformation at Commercial Bank

Leading Commercial Bank

Moss became Group Chief Executive Officer of Commercial Bank in August 2025. In his current role, he leads a team focused on pioneering digital banking in Qatar.

His leadership builds on Commercial Bank’s longstanding presence in Qatar since its founding in 1975 and its contribution to the country’s economic growth and client development.

A 33-Year HSBC Career

Before joining Commercial Bank, Moss spent 33 years with HSBC Group, holding executive and board-level positions across several major international markets.

His most recent HSBC role was Regional Chief Executive Officer – Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, based in Dubai, from April 2021 to August 2025. Prior to this, he served as Regional Chief Executive for Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada from 2020 to 2021.

From 2013 to 2020, he was Group Head of Strategy and Planning and Chief of Staff to the Group Chief Executive. Earlier positions included Group Head of Mergers and Acquisitions, Head of Corporate Strategy & Development in Hong Kong, Head of Asset & Liability Management, and Chief Operating Officer of Investment Banking Asia Pacific.

His earlier HSBC experience also included roles in London within the European Division and Financial Services Audit.

Strategic and Financial Expertise

Across his career, Moss has developed expertise in business strategy, valuation, and negotiation, supported by extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate strategy, investment banking, and executive management.

His international career across London, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Doha has provided a broad perspective on banking and financial services leadership.

Leadership Through Inclusivity

Inclusivity is a central part of Moss’s professional philosophy. He emphasizes the importance of embracing diverse ideas, styles, and perspectives to enable people to contribute fully and build stronger teams.

He believes that inclusive organizations can strengthen resilience, support social mobility, protect the environment, and contribute to sustainable economic growth for employees, customers, and communities.

Mentorship and Community Engagement

Beyond his executive responsibilities, Moss contributes to mentorship and charitable initiatives. He serves as a mentor with Chair Mentors International and is an Advisory Board Member for the Hong Kong Red Cross.

His commitment to charitable causes has personal roots in his family’s experience with leukemia. Following his mother’s passing when he was young, his family established a local branch of the Leukemia Research Fund in Stratford-upon-Avon, UK, where he participated in fundraising activities. He also expresses strong admiration for Maggie’s, a UK charity providing free cancer support.

Education and Professional Development

Moss’s professional career is supported by extensive experience in international banking and senior executive management. His progression through increasingly senior responsibilities at HSBC, followed by his appointment as Group CEO of Commercial Bank, reflects a career built across strategy, operations, financial services, and executive leadership.

Stephen Moss is recognized for his extensive international banking career, including 33 years with HSBC and senior leadership across the UK, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East.
